I created this while at the 6th annual Reginald F. Lewis African American children’s book fair. The fair was excellent and busy. With all the eager book buyers and joyous families I was inspired and this idea popped into my head of a playful elephant so I had to draw it. My goal was to capture the carefree playful expression with loose lines and a vivid color palette. The colors in the photo reference were different but I felt these colors expressed the feeling.
It’s done with Caran d’Ache #3886 watercolor pencil, Tombow calligraphy pen, acrylic paint - Reeves and Golden Paints. Reeves are more transparent acrylic paint, similar to watercolor. Golden Paints are thicker, more heavy body paints.
