Recently a good friend let me borrow his Manuscript Calligraphy pen. I was excited to try it out. One of my favorite places to draw is in the Starbuck's area in Barnes & Noble. I love the variety of people who pass through or sit for awhile. Young, old, black, all races of individuals, families and friends. It's a challenge to draw people in public. You never know how long they'll be there.
I have no specific area to sit. Just wherever I can set up my art supplies without getting in peoples way. I like to mix drawing people around me to drawing from photo reference on my IPad. Usually I start with an earthy watercolor pencil or non photo blue pencil then I'll ink with pen. If I want to colors I'll put a layer of matte media to seal the drawing because if I don't the inks will smear when I start painting. This practice has pushed me to add broaden my artistic range with more energy, movement and emotion.
